The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Livestock Laboratory recently developed a technique to control egg size by controlling chicken feed. The researchers added some substances to the chicken feed that just entered the laying period to observe the changes in egg size. As a result, it was found that incorporation of linoleic acid in the feed promoted egg growth. When the proportion of linoleic acid in the feed is increased to 0.86%, the weight of each egg is basically maintained at 58.6 grams. Both sunflower oil and corn oil contain linoleic acid. The researchers also found that if the eggs are too large, as long as taurine is added to the feed, the eggs can be made smaller. Experiments show that for every 0.5% taurine added to the feed, the weight of the eggs can be reduced by 1 gram. (Transfer from: China National Poultry Network 2006/7/27)
